A young girl has hit the back of the net after connecting small bands which stretch the perimeter of a football pitch.

Creative and determined Lucia O’Rourke, from Paisley, started making loom bands with friends in school. It was a hobby the nine-year-old really enjoyed and she found herself invested into making it even bigger.

Loom bands are small, colourful rubber bands that can be transformed into bracelets and charms using either just your fingers, drinking straws, pencils, forks or a simple specially-designed Rainbow Loom and hook.

Often, people design them to fit around their wrists – but Lucia had a bigger goal in mind and spent months on her work of art. Her mum, Jennifer, says that she was impressed by how dedicated her daughter was to making them as big as possible.

And after months of hard work in putting them together since the summer holidays, Lucia and her grandfather, Robert, visited The Marshes, near Lochfield, to measure the length. To Lucia’s surprise, it reached all the way around the perimeter of the football pitch.

“I was very proud of myself with how big I made the loom band,” shetold the Paisley Daily Express. “I was shocked when I saw how far it went round the football pitch with papa. It took me a long time and I am happy that my loom bands will be in the newspaper!”

Jennifer added: “I am very proud of her and it was something that she did with her friends in school. From there, she decided to bring it home with her and from there it has grown and grown.

“She has been doing it since the summer holidays – and I couldn’t begin to tell you how many loom bands have been used – but it has been boxes and boxes. I couldn’t believe that it went around the perimeter of the football pitch.

“My dad, her papa, got her a reel to measure it out and the smile on Lucia’s face when she was doing it was amazing.

“She has done this all herself. She has always been into her arts and crafts so this was definitely something she loved doing. We as a family are proud of her.”
