PRINCETON, W.Va. -As the coldest temperatures this fall approach, making sure your home is ready for the winter season is crucial, and can save you money.
To be prepared you want to check your foundation, making sure all water lines are insulated and all vents around your home are closed.
“Other things that you can do on the inside of your home is the furthest faucet from where your main water line comes in, you should let the cold side run about the size of a pencil,” said Patty Hypes, President of Bud Hypes Plumbing.
For inside your home you can also open cabinet doors to make sure heat is hitting your water pipes. Hypes says for those who may start to see their pipes freezing she has a trick.
“Sometimes if you see that it’s starting to freeze or whatever, you can put a hairdryer underneath the kitchen sinks, but if it gets underground and freezes, then gets up to your main water line, that’s where the damage comes in,” continued Hypes.
For those concerned about their water bill climbing because of the running faucets Hypes says in the long run it could save you thousands of dollars.
“If your water pipes do freeze after the thawing starts, if they have frozen, it can cause some damage between. It costs about $2,000 to $4,000 to have your pipes replaced. So, it is cost efficient,” said Hypes.
So remember to keep the farthest faucet running in your home, open cabinet doors, check your foundation and get insulation placed around your pipes.
