(InvestigateTV) — The first Tuesday after Thanksgiving is known as Giving Tuesday, and it’s a great time to help out local charities. But because people have cut back this year on their expenses, charities are feeling the pinch.
For those who can’t afford to give money this year, Leslie Tayne, a bankruptcy attorney, said they could donate their time by offering to volunteer or donate gently used items to charities that accept them.
“Other than cash, many charities will take donations of blankets and sheets. Certainly, many local shelters are looking for donations of cleaning supplies and other things that would help these charities run,” Tayne said. “Many of those charities have lists on their home pages of things that can be donated even through organizations like Amazon.”
Those planning to donate money should always verify the charity is legitimate and in good standing. Charity Navigator is one respected resource that evaluates charities. Donors can look up any 501(c)(3) non-profit.
People can also look up an organization’s budget to see where its money goes, how much money its CEO is paid, and what percentage of the money donated actually goes to help the people who need it most.
Don’t forget to ask for a receipt for tax purposes. Also, be wary of organizations that use pressure for donations: that could be a sign of a scam. Finally, be very skeptical of organizations that ask for donations via gift cards or wire transfer.
