TAZEWELL, Va. -Folks gathered on Thanksgiving morning to run around the historic streets of Tazewell before diving into their Thanksgiving meals.
With one hundred pre-registered runners and more signing up day of these runners took off trotting down the road.
This annual event is sponsored by Tazewell Today and other community businesses to not only bring the community together but also collect food items for the A Child Shall Lead Them food pantry.
This fast-paced event gives out multiple awards such as overall winners, best costume, fastest dog and more.
The director of the event says this is an event she looks forward to each year bringing the community together in a unique way.
“I love a turkey trot because I think there’s something for everyone. You can come and run your fastest or you can come and walk and run with your family. Everybody of all ages are here. It’s really just a fun way to get everybody together and see people you haven’t seen in a long time. So, a turkey trot to me is something that is just goofy and fun and helping us to remember to be thankful today,” said Kara Spivey, Turkey Trot Race Director.
The winner of the run came a long way from home agreeing about this tradition.
“I really love hanging out with my family and just being up in the Appalachian Mountains is always fun. Coming from the Rocky Mountains is definitely a big difference, and it is a fun one,” said Mitch Hixson, Winner of 2024 Turkey Trot.
