BOLT, W.Va. – A man is dead and a Raleigh County Sheriff’s Office deputy was wounded during a shooting incident this morning.

According to information posted by the Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to a residence in Breckenridge Village in Bolt after a 9 a.m. call was made about a possibly mentally disturbed individual with a firearm.

A deputy was immediately fired upon and hit when arriving at the scene and the deputy returned fire, fatally striking the suspect.

The injured deputy was transported to a local hospital and is currently being treated for a non-life-threatening gunshot wound.

The incident is currently under investigation by the Sheriff’s Office Detective Bureau and the West Virginia State Police.

To respect the privacy of those involved, the names of the individuals are being withheld at this time to allow families to be notified.
