COPPERAS COVE, Texas (KWTX/Gray News) – A house fire in Texas left one person dead and several family members without a home on Thanksgiving Day.
According to the Copperas Cove Fire Department, crews responded to reports of a structure fire at about 4:30 a.m. in the 2100 block of Circle Drive.
Arriving firefighters found smoke and flames coming from the front of the garage of a single-family home. They were also told that one resident was still in the house.
Firefighters said the home was heavily filled with smoke which caused complete loss of visibility, but they were able to find the person inside.
Emergency personnel said the man was not breathing and did not have a pulse. Life-saving measures were performed but unfortunately, he died at the scene.
Nine people lived at the home. The man who died was identified as 61-year-old George Freeman.
Freeman’s wife and seven children were able to escape the flames.
Officials said it took crews about 30 minutes to extinguish the fire.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation, but it damaged the garage, dining room, kitchen and living room areas of the home along with leaving smoke damage.
The American Red Cross is assisting the family.
