Tulisa Contostavlos has been a fan favourite since entering the I’m a Celebrity jungle for its most recent series alongside a star-studded group of celebs.
The N-Dubz star, 36, has been a shoulder to cry on for many of her fellow campmates on I’m a Celebrity…Get Me Out of Here! so far, which has made her popular with viewers, as her high spirits have continued to boost moral.
However we haven’t seen as much screen time on the ITV show of the former X Factor judge as some fans may want, as she has only had to take on one trial, at the time of writing.
It comes as Tulisa was already been ruled out on medical grounds for a previous trial ‘Jack in the ‘screamstalk”, and later confessed to her campmates it was due to heights.
But what is Bell’s palsy and how does the condition affect the hitmaker whilst in the Australian jungle?
What is Bell’s palsy?
Bell’s palsy is a neurological disorder that causes weakness or paralysis on one side of the face. It occurs when the facial nerve, which controls the muscles in the face, is damaged or stops working properly. Symptoms of Bell’s palsy include:

- weakness on 1 side of your face, or not being able to move 1 side of your face – this usually happens over a few days
- a drooping eyelid or corner of your mouth
- drooling
- a dry mouth
- loss of taste
- a dry or watering eye
The NHS advise you may also find it difficult to close the eye on the weak side of your face. Rarely, you may not be able to move both sides of your face. You should ask for an urgent GP appointment or get help from NHS 111 if you have symptoms.
How did Tulisa develop Bell’s palsy?
Appearing on Loose Women in 2020, Tulisa explained that her condition stems from when she suffered nerve damage following a serious horse riding incident.
The singer appeared on Olivia Attwood’s So Wrong, It’s Right podcast this year and revealed she suffered her first Bell’s Palsy attack when she was aged 24.
The I’m A Celeb star said she hid in the house during this time before she decided to get fillers to “try and balance it out”. However, she was still suffering from discomfort due to the impact.
Why was she ruled out of the height trial?
Bell’s Palsy could be dangerous to suffer a flare-up while at a height, due to its ability to cause sudden weakness or paralysis on one side of the face.
The former X Factor judge has been supported by Rylan Clark after negative comments began circulating about her appearance. Taking to Twitter, the BBC Radio 2 host urged fans to stop making insensitive jokes about her appearance.
He said: “Also before people start going for appearance, Tulisa has been through a lot health wise the last few years so let’s not make s**t jokes about her on twitter yeah.”
