A woman was left gobsmacked after her mum invited her cheating ex-fiancé to a family dinner where she was introducing her new boyfriend.

Break-ups are tough, but usually, the support of family and friends helps. But one 27-year-old woman, who discovered her fiancé was having an affair with a colleague, was saddened when her mother’s reaction was “oddly neutral”.

After deciding to end things with her unfaithful partner, her mum suggested “everyone makes mistakes” and questioned if she was “overreacting”.

Despite this, she was determined to move on. Now in a “healthy, loving relationship” with her new boyfriend, who she describes as “loyal, kind, and hardworking”, her mother still disapproves.

On Reddit, she shared: “She once told me, “He’s nice, but he’s not exactly husband material, is he?” and made comments like, “Your ex could’ve provided you with such a comfortable life.” I brushed it off because I know my mom can be superficial, and I didn’t want to let it ruin our relationship.”

She was “excited” to introduce her boyfriend to her family at Thanksgiving, but was shocked to find her ex “sitting at the table, laughing with [her] siblings like nothing had happened”, leaving her new partner “confused” and her feeling anxious.

The woman questioned his appearance there only to learn he was invited by her mother, who claimed he’s “practically family”. When she protested, reminding her mother of the hurt he caused – not to mention the fact she’d brought her current boyfriend – her mother dismissed her concerns, stating her boyfriend “isn’t exactly Thanksgiving material” and that her ex “belonged there”, all within earshot of her partner.

Outraged, the woman continued: “I was furious. I told her that if my ex stayed, we were leaving. She rolled her eyes and said, ‘Don’t be dramatic. It’s not like you’re still dating him. Be an adult and get over it.'”

The couple left, which infuriated her mother, who accused her daughter of “embarrassing” her in front of an “important” guest. Now, she’s facing criticism from her family, with some accusing her of “overreacting” while others support her.

Reddit users shared their opinions. One commented: “Your mom 100% knew what she was doing to you with that. Even just thinking about it it’s disgusting.”

Echoing this sentiment, another added, “She’s not exactly mother material is she? Your mom should have your back and want you to be cherished by your partner.”

To which, the woman responded: “Honestly, it’s hard not to feel that way right now. A mother should want her child to be happy and respected, but it feels like she’s more concerned with appearances and wealth than my emotional well-being.”

“It’s disappointing, to say the least. I just wish she could see that my happiness and being with someone who truly cherishes me are what really matter.”
