Try to think back to when you last moved the furniture out for a proper clean.
If it’s been some time, let this serve as your wakeup call, as a mum was left seriously unsettled after making a grim find behind her son‘s bed, sparking concerns about its duration.
The mother-of-eight and TikToker @misskerryand8 began her clip with a warning: “Guys, this is why it’s so important to make sure you move your furniture from time to time and check behind beds and furniture.”
The mum revealed her son’s room wall, blighted with dark mould. While tidying behind her son’s bed, she discovered “there’s actually mould growing behind there”.
The NHS has flagged that mould exposure can spark a spread of health troubles, including allergic reactions, respiratory problems, lung infections like aspergillosis caused by the Aspergillus fungus, and even asthma flare-ups. Therefore, encountering mould at home isn’t to be taken lightly.
Despite tackling it a week earlier, she noted the battle with the persistent issue continues, since the mould “come back” after using the well-known Astonish mould and mildew spray. Yet if the root is a structural building flaw, thorough cleaning won’t suffice – the core problem needs fixing.
She was desperate to find a permanent solution, asking for “tips and tricks” and expressing her confusion about the mould’s origin. She stated: “I’ve actually moved the bed away from the wall to see if it will help with the [air] circulation.”
The mum also had an air purifier in the room, which indicated that the air quality “isn’t great”.
In response, some commenters suggested a “big dehumidifier” might solve the problem, while another thought it looked like a structural issue with the wall that needed addressing. One concerned parent advised: “Do not let him sleep in that room,” a sentiment echoed by another.
Another person suggested: “Open curtains daily, get a dehumidifier and wipe down regularly with warm water and dish detergent. If it’s a rental, the landlord needs to replace it. It’s not safe at all”. A fellow TikToker recommended using vinegar to clean and kill the mould, adding: “Vinegar cleans the mould and also kills it. I had a bit in a bedroom corner, and I cleaned it with plenty of vinegar. Also open your windows every morning for good air circulation.”
