As temperatures continue to plummet, households across the UK are likely to crank up their heating, adding to the already escalating costs of maintaining a home.
The situation is particularly grim for the residents of two Scottish cities that appear on the list of most expensive cities for running a house, coming in at second and third.
Online home retailer Wayfair conducted a study to identify the priciest place in the UK to run a home, considering factors such as the average home size, local utility prices, and utilities per square meter for an 85m2 property.
Both Glasgow and Edinburgh appeared on the list, coming in at second and third respectively. Glasgow came in second, boasting an average house size of 97 square meters and utility costs of £300.57, translating to an average of £3.10 per square meter.
Liverpool topped the list with an average property size of 92 square meters and monthly costs averaging £316.71, equating to £3.44 per square meter.
Next was Edinburgh with the typical house size being 97 square meters and the cost of utilities per person amounting to £293.56.
Surprisingly, London ranked at the bottom of the list in the tenth spot, trailing behind other cities including Bristol, Nottingham, Leeds, and Brighton.
Wayfair also offered some advice on how to cut down on home running costs. The retailer recommends homeowners try to limit their use of utilities during peak hours, typically from 8am to 10pm.
You can also make a significant difference to your bills by turning off certain appliances when they’re not in use. While it’s not feasible to switch off your fridge or freezer, other kitchen gadgets like kettles, microwaves, and even ovens can be turned off at the wall.
