Dumfries and Galloway residents are being given the chance to make special memories at the region’s National Trust for Scotland properties.

The conservation charity is urging people to get outside and enjoy a variety of winter activities – be it stunning walks, wildlife spotting or garden exploration.

The trust looks after a variety of properties, including Broughton House and Garden in Kirkcudbright, Threave Garden and Estate on the outskirts of Castle Douglas and the stunning landscape at Rockcliffe.

And it has been a bumper year for the charity, with more than 900,000 people visiting its places in the south and west region in 2024 so far.

National Trust for Scotland’s regional director for the south and west region, Ian McLelland, said: “We’re looking forward to welcoming visitors to our special places in Dumfries and Galloway this winter season, where there is an array of activities happening, suitable for all ages and interests.

“Our places offer the perfect setting to create treasured memories with loved ones to last a lifetime and there is something for everyone to enjoy.

“Whether it’s fun family days out at Threave Garden, adventurous experiences with friends at our countryside locations, or shopping for last-minute gifts, we have you covered this Christmas.

“It’s thanks to our members and supporters for their ongoing generosity that we’re able to continue our work to enhance and protect Scotland’s natural and cultural heritage now and for future generations to enjoy.”

Although Threave House is closed, visitors can still enjoy the garden, cafe and shop.

The garden is a unique horticultural landscape that has been created at the hands of the trust’s School of Heritage Gardening students since 1960.

Featuring themed garden rooms, visitors can explore diverse gardening styles such as a rose garden, rockery and walled garden. Visitors can also enjoy peaceful walks and stunning views across the grounds, as well as the wetlands nature reserve which is home to a remarkable collection of wildlife, flora and fauna.

Rockcliffe offers the chance to see nature in all its glory along the trails of one of Scotland’s prettiest stretches of coastline, meandering through meadows and along coastal walks with beautiful views.
