A Scots beauty spot has been closed after careless fly tippers dumped piles of rubbish.

Shocked volunteers at Amisfield Walled Garden in East Lothian were furious to find waste strewn across the gardens on December 2 with locals slamming the “horrible and disgusting” behaviour.

East Lothian Council have been cracking down on the ‘growing problem’ of fly tipping in the area, with around 400 incidents reported to the authority each year. Sharing to Facebook, Amisfield Walled Garden said: “There is pedestrian access only at Amisfield today. Sadly, we have been the victim of fly tipping,” reports Edinburgh Live.

One follower commented: “Horrible and disgusting behaviour. I can understand why everyone connected to the walled garden is upset and angry.”

A second added : “That is terrible. I just don’t understand people who do that. They have driven all the way there when they could have driven to a Council depositing place for any unwanted goods or rubbish.” A third posted: “That is absolutely disgusting. I just don’t understand how anyone thinks it’s ok to do that!”

Speaking on a rise in fly tipping on their website, East Lothian Council said: “Fly tipping of household and business waste is also a growing problem in East Lothian and we deal with over 400 reported incidents a year.

“If you have some household waste that you need to get rid of and it can’t be put in your wheelie bin, either take it to one of the many recycling centres around the county or you can phone to arrange a bulk waste collection. Council Officers are authorised to serve Fixed Penalty Notices on those who engage in fly-tipping.

“The current financial penalty is £500 and there is no right of appeal. Failure to pay the penalty within 14 days will result in a report being submitted to the Procurator Fiscal.” Edinburgh Live has also approached Police Scotland for comment.
