The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo has launched a special exhibition to celebrate its 75th anniversary.

Since 1950, the annual event has dazzled audiences with a programme of music, dancing, and military drills performed by British and international armed forces and cultural performers.

Rousing pipe and drum renditions are accompanied by highland dancers and dazzling light shows on the side of Edinburgh Castle, along with spectacular displays from overseas performers.

Around 220,000 visitors flock to the capital to enjoy the show every August, with a further 100 million watching the spectacle on their television.

To mark its 75th year, The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo is hosting a free gallery installation that takes visitors back in time to explore the event’s history.

From December 2 until December 16, visitors to St Andrew Square in Edinburgh can trace the evolution of The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo to become one of the world’s leading immersive events.

The timeline showcases the heritage and heroes of the Edinburgh Tattoo, promising to bring together the best of British Military with international performances from a global cast.

Photographs of the event’s performance highlights over the decades line the open-air square where the exhibition is housed. The showcase also highlights when other commonwealth countries were invited to perform in the city, helping to chart the gradual growth of the Edinburgh Tattoo in both scope and global popularity.

For visitors who are inspired to experience the Edinburgh Tattoo in the flesh, tickets for the 75th anniversary show are now available too. The theme for the celebrations will be The Heroes Who Made Us, spotlighting the individuals who have helped to pull off the global spectacle for the past 74 years.

The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo’s 75th anniversary Show event will run from August 1 until August 23, 2025. Tickets can be purchased either online or by calling 0131 225 1188.
