A ‘severely malnourished’ seal pup was found on an East Lothian beach over the weekend.

The mammal was rushed by medics from the North Berwick seafront to a rehabilitation centre, where’s it’s hoped she will gain weight and ‘learn how to be a seal’ before she’s released back into the wild, reports Edinburgh Live.

The British Divers Marine Life Rescue (BDMLR) have confirmed the good news that the seal pup is likely to lead a ‘healthy and happy life’.

BDMLR posted to Facebook: “This adorable little pup was found severely malnourished in North Berwick (Scotland) over the weekend.

“Thanks to our Medics she is now safe at a rehabilitation centre where she will gain weight and learn how to be a seal before being released again, hopefully to lead a healthy and happy life!”

Issuing advice for locals who discover a seal on the beach, BDMLR said on their site: “It’s not unusual to see seals resting on the beach. Seals are semi-aquatic and spend a lot of their time on land to sleep, conserve energy, digest food more efficiently and raise pups.

“Therefore, finding a seal on the beach does not mean there is necessarily a problem. After stormy weather and/or high tides, seals will haul out on beaches to rest and regain their strength.

“Many do not need first aid, but we will always try to find someone to check them out just in case.”
