Nick Frost has been causing a stir among Star Wars fans following his ‘scene-stealing’ performance in the new series.
The first two instalments of the live-action show Skeleton Crew have dropped on Disney+, with viewers and critics alike singing its praises. The star known for Hot Fuzz and Shaun of the Dead has been particularly lauded for his role.
In Skeleton Crew, Frost lends his voice to droid SM-33, who is discovered by a band of children stranded on an old spacecraft. The character quickly becomes an integral part of their quest to find home.
Frost’s portrayal has been hailed as ‘scene-stealing’, sparking excitement for his continued presence throughout the series’ remaining six episodes. Fans have also noted an Easter egg in his character’s name.
SM-33, who insists on reporting to his captain and speaks in a pirate-like manner, has led fans to spot that his name resembles Smee, the loyal boatswain to Captain Hook from Peter Pan, reports Wales Online.
One enthusiast commented: “SM-33 the coolest guy ever? My guy can throw hands,” while another posted: “Nick Frost is awesome ‘SM-33’ I see what you did there.”
Another fan expressed: “I like the focus on the Galaxy’s pirate culture. Nick Frost’s SM-33 is the scene-stealer so far, and there’s an intriguing central mystery.”
Writer and director Jon Favreau, known for his work on The Mandalorian, was also involved in the production of Skeleton Crew and even hinted that Frost could make an appearance in the show as multiple characters.
In a separate interview, Frost revealed: “I got a message from Jon Favreau to say just ‘because you’re a robot doesn’t mean that you can’t appear somewhere as yourself.'” This has sparked excitement among fans, who are now meticulously scanning each scene for a potential live-action cameo by Frost.
Frost has already expressed his enthusiasm for taking on more projects, whether reprising his current role or exploring new ones. When asked about the possibility of appearing in other Star Wars series set during the same timeframe as Skeleton Crew, he told Shortlist: “Yeah, absolutely, of course I would. He’s a really fun character to be. Even SM-34, and 35, I can voice those too.”
“I’d like to be there in person. I’d even wear a helmet, and could do my own weird voice acting. I’d like to see more of him.”
