A senior Glasgow Labour councillor has been arrested and charged in connection with stalking offences.
Philip Braat, who used to be Lord Provost in the city, has also been suspended by Labour pending an investigation
The 48 year old was Glasgow’s first citizen from 2020 to 2022 and represented the city on the global stage during the COP26 climate summit.
A Police Scotland spokesman said: “A 48-year-old man was arrested and charged on Wednesday, October 23, in connection with stalking offences. A report will be submitted to the procurator fiscal and he is expected to appear at Glasgow Sheriff Court at a later date.”
Braat, a city councillor since 2007 who represents the Anderston/City/Yorkhill ward, used to lead the Strathclyde Police Authority.
Until recently, he worked for newly-elected Glasgow North East MP Maureen Burke.
He used to be a solicitor and, according to his register of interests, he remains a member of the Law Society of Scotland.
A Labour Party spokesman said: “The Labour Party takes all complaints seriously. They are fully investigated in line with our rules and procedures, and any appropriate action is taken.”
