A man has been charged after an ‘attack’ on seals in a Scots seaside town. The incident took place in North Berwick on Thursday, November 28, 2024.
An investigation was launched after Police Scotland was notified of an alleged attack on the mammals at around 4.45pm on the day in question.
The force was told it occurred at North Berwick Harbour, on the town’s Victoria Road, and that one of the seal pups involved was located at the scene.
But the other went missing after the alleged attack and officers launched a probe. Police Scotland confirmed the investigation last week.
At the time, a Police Scotland spokesperson said: “About 4.45pm on Thursday, November 28, 2024, we received a report of a two seals having been attacked by a man near to the harbour in Victoria Road, North Berwick.
“Officers attended and contact was made with appropriate agencies regarding the seals welfare. Enquiries are ongoing.” Today, the force confirmed an arrest had been made.
A post on the Police Scotland East Lothian Facebook page read: “A 61-year-old man has been charged in connection with a report of two seals having been attacked in North Berwick.
“The incident happened around 4.45pm on Thursday, 28 November, 2024. A report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal.” The Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service will decide whether the man should be prosecuted.
