(Gray News) – An Indiana man is being praised as a “good Samaritan” after finding two baby girls strapped in their car seats sitting in a ditch.
Indianapolis Metropolitan Police said they responded to the report of a stolen car in the 1800 block of Gimber Street around 11 a.m. Monday.
Police said the stolen 2013 Grey Hyundai Sonata had the license plate number of 364CMU.
Authorities said they had been trying to locate the 2013 Grey Hyundai Sonata that had been stolen with a 4-month-old and 5-month-old baby inside.
Around that time, Robert Deane called 911 shortly after the car was stolen. Deane said that he went out to get a package that had been delivered and found two children in car seats in a ditch, WHAS reported.
Deane took the babies inside and out of the below-freezing temperatures. Police confirmed the two babies were the missing girls and that they were safe.
Deane said he didn’t want any credit, and that it was his birthday.
“I can’t thank that good Samaritan enough,” IMPD Officer William Young said. “It’s cold out here, who knows what would have happened if this particular individual hadn’t gone outside.”
The car was found close to where the children were left.
“We do not have a suspect in custody yet,” Young said. “Our next priority is to figure out who was responsible for this.”
Police are still searching for the suspect, and they’re asking witnesses or anyone with information about the case to come forward or submit an anonymous tip.
