BECKLEY, W.Va. – GivingTuesday is a day known around the world, when people are encouraged to help non-profit organization in their communities.
People are being encouraged to celebrate the occasion by embracing their spirit of generosity by donating or volunteering at local non-profits.
In celebration of GivingTuesday the United Way of Southern West Virginia is collecting shoes and money for their annual Giving Shoes Day Shoe Drive. Now through the end of the month the organization will be collecting and purchasing shoes for children in need in southern West Virginia.
“They can stop by at anytime with a monetary donation. The best way to give is through our website at unitedwayswv.org. There’s an option to make a recurring donation monthly or a one time donation. As little as $20 can help us purchase a pair of shoes for a child without the proper footwear,” said executive director, Trena Dacal.
Dacal says you can also buy shoes directly from Walmart online and have them delivered to the united way directly by using their gift registry.
Dacal says the United Way of Southern West Virginia gives out around one thousand pairs of shoes annually to schools year round.
Another non-profit hoping to make a difference with your help is The Salvation Army of Beckley.
“We need help with our angel tree for folks to go out and adopt kids off the tree. Get those toys and bring those toys back. We’re also in need of help with bell ringer,” said Captain Liz Blusiewicz. “Folks can go to registertoring.org and sign up for a time slot to go ring the bells. We also need food for our food pantry. We give out food boxes Monday through Friday 9 am to 3 pm.”
If you don’t have the ability to donate food or money you can always donate your time to an organization. Blusiewicz says The Salvation Army has plenty of opportunities to volunteer.
“We’re looking for a lot of volunteers to help with our soup kitchen, our boys and girls clubs. We always need mentors, tutors and people that can read with the kids. We’re always looking for folks to come in and help us pack. Getting all this food off the shelf and into a bag. It doesn’t just happen. It takes an army of people,” said Blusiewicz.
