South Lanarkshire Council has announced changes for residents to its bin collection days over the festive period.

No collections will be made on Christmas Day and Boxing Day or on New Year’s Day, meaning householders whose normal bin days are on Wednesday to Friday will be asked to put out their rubbish two days later than usual in the week following Christmas and one day later in the first week of 2025.

Food and garden waste bins will not be emptied during the festive fortnight, with the last burgundy bin uplifts of the year taking place on December 20 and the service resuming on January 6, with special uplifts also being suspended for the same period.

Council officials shared information on the revised dates and plans on their website ahead of the Christmas period.

With Christmas Day and Boxing Day falling on Wednesday and Thursday, residents whose bins would usually be collected on those days are asked to put out their bins for kerbside collection on Friday, December 27, and Saturday, December 28, respectively; and those due to have bins collected on Friday, December 27, will instead have them uplifted on Sunday, December 29.

In the following week, Wednesday bins will be collected on Thursday; January 2, with scheduled Thursday and Friday collections instead respectively taking place on Friday, January 3, and Saturday, January 4.

There are no changes to regular Monday and Tuesday collections, which will take place as normal in both weeks, and the council information adds: “All collections will return to normal on Monday, January 6 2025.”

South Lanarkshire’s six household waste and recycling centres – at Blantyre, Carluke, East Kilbride, Eastfield, Larkhall and Strathaven – will be closed on Christmas Day and New Year’s Day, with the council advising: “Opening times on other days are the same as regular winter opening times; please remember that you will need to book a slot for all centres.

“The collection of burgundy food and garden waste bins will be suspended over Christmas and new year. The last uplift date will be Friday, December 20, and the first uplift date of 2025 will be Monday, January 6.”
