Aberdeen boss Jimmy Thelin will have funds available to strengthen his squad when the January window opens.

The Dons are currently second in the table and their Swedish boss will have the option to bolster his squad next month. The Pittodrie board still have the bulk of the funds from their club record sale of Bojan Miovski to Girona for whom they raked in around £6million.

Will Thelin return to his native Sweden for talent, when their season comes to an end and contracts start to expire? If Aberdeen could get a result against champions Celtic on Wednesday night then it could put a whole different complexion on their season, in terms of a prolonged chase at the top of the table.

The Dons scouting team have been out looking at defensive options in recent weeks and that is likely where some of the January work will be done. Nicky Devlin has hardly missed a game but they will still need right-back cover. Young Jack Milne has stepped in but it is not his preferred position.

Another central defender could also be in the offing. Aberdeen were interested in Fulham centre half Ibane Bowat in the last window but they then pulled their interest. Later in the window went to Portsmouth. The Dons, in terms of experience, only have Angus MacDonald, Gavin Molloy and Slobodan Rubezic for the central defensive positions.

Jamie McGrath

Kevin Nisbet is also on loan from Millwall. Could the Lions decide to recall him in January? If they did then you would expect Aberdeen to bring in another centre forward.

The other intriguing side of things is that Jack MacKenzie and Jamie McGrath are both out of contract in the summer. They have, so far, been unable to agree new deals and could Aberdeen and Thelin look to cash in? If he did then a left-back and wide option could come into play.
