PRINCETON, W. Va. – If you have been looking for a new pet this holiday season, now might be the best time to adopt.
The Mercer County Animal Shelter is holding multiple promotions this month to encourage adoptions as the shelter continues to overcrowd.
Thanks to the return of the Bissell Pet Foundation’s “Empty the Shelters” event, adoption fees are waived from now until December 15th. An area physician, Dr. Peters, will then be paying for adoptions from December 15th through the end of the year, December 31st.
Grants Supermarkets are contributing as well, with the store donating one bag of food for every adoption. Even with the promotions, the Mercer County Animal Shelter’s 64 animal limit is now being pushed to more than 80 in their care, with the weather continuing to bring more in.
“Adoptions are very slow right now. We really, really need to move some animals. I can’t stress that enough, and with the weather getting even more colder, we’ll be seeing even more come in.” says Shelter Director Stacey Harman, “We’re trying to avoid euthanization, of course, but if we keep, you know, getting animals in and not moving any out, then we’ll have no choice but to euthanize.”
Animals available for adoption are fixed and have a free microchip included. Harman encourages those who are financially able to adopt a pet to do so, adding you can literally save lives. However, she says to make sure your ready for an animal before getting a new pet for Christmas.
