Former three-time boxing world champion Israel Vázquez has tragically passed away at the age of 46 after a battle with cancer.
A former WBC super bantamweight champion, Vázquez retired in 2010 with an impressive record of 44-5. He is best remembered for his thrilling four-fight rivalry with fellow Mexican great Rafael Márquez. After losing their first encounter, Vázquez claimed victory in the next two epic battles before suffering a knockout loss in their fourth meeting.
During his illustrious career, Vázquez held the IBF title from 2004 to 2005, and the WBC and The Ring titles between 2005 and 2008. Known for his relentless style and knockout power, 32 of his 44 wins came via stoppage, making him a fan favorite every time he stepped into the ring. Recently diagnosed with stage four sarcoma, Vázquez’s fight against the disease was sadly cut short.
WBC President Mauricio Sulaimán confirmed the news on X, formerly known as Twitter, paying tribute to the boxing legend. “Israel Vázquez is finally resting in peace. May God give strength and support to his wife, Laura, their children, family, and friends during these difficult times,” he wrote. Sulaimán added, “Thank you, Israel, for the many great memories you gave us both inside and outside the ring. You are now eternal. Rest in peace.”
Vázquez turned professional in 1995 at just 17 years old, winning his first nine fights before experiencing his first loss in his tenth bout. By 2004, he captured his first major world title by defeating José Luis Valbuena, reports the Mirror.
Last month, Vázquez’s wife Laura shared with the Los Angeles Times the impact of his illness, revealing he had become too weak to speak and was short of breath. “We were told he would have six months to live, but I’m not going to give up,” she said. “We’re going to get a second opinion. We know there’s still hope.”
Tributes have poured in from across the boxing world. Legendary trainer Freddie Roach called Vázquez “a world champion and legend,” saying, “One of the best boxers I ever had the privilege of working with. Israel, my friend, may you rest in peace. My condolences to the Vázquez family and all who knew him.”
Australian boxer Billy Dib expressed his sorrow, writing, “Heartbroken to hear about the passing of Israel Vázquez. He was not only a champion but a true warrior in and out of the ring. My heartfelt condolences to his family and friends. May he rest in peace.”
Former unified lightweight champion George Kambosos Jr. also paid tribute on social media, saying: “RIP legend. It was an honor to have met you, an absolute warrior of the game. My condolences to his family and friends.”
