A parents’ council at a Rutherglen primary school were blown away by the response to their annual Christmas fair fundraiser.

Queues quickly formed as hundreds of people from the local community flocked to Calderwood Primary in Buchanan Drive on Saturday, November 30.

There was also a special visitor as Santa stopped off until the afternoon with a couple of his reindeers, adding some magical festive cheer.

Key attractions included Santa’s grotto, the chance to get up close with reindeer in the playground, traders’ hall, cafe, home baking, games, eco-uniforms, a toy and book sale, as well as a raffle and tombolas.

In the space of three hours, from 10am until 1pm, the event organised by the school’s parent council raised a whopping £9300 of pure profit for the school.

Elaine Miller, chair of the parent council, said: “I’m blown away by people’s generosity and support – contributing prize donations, time and money at Saturday’s fair. This is by far the most we’ve ever raised at a school fundraising event.

“I wanted to take the opportunity to thank everyone that helped make it so successful.

“We have the most amazing school staff who volunteered on the day, alongside our troop of volunteers who came to set up the night before and help run the stalls on the day.

“And of course a big thank you to all of you who came to support and spend your pennies for a worthwhile cause.

“With an increase in South Lanarkshire Council cuts we need these events more than ever.

“All the funds we raised on the day will go back into the school to enhance our children’s learning experience so they can benefit from school trips, essential resources, sports kits and IT equipment.”
