Blackburn Rovers boss John Eustace believes Todd Cantwell is helping the club take their game to the next level after the former Rangers midfielder scored the winner in Tuesday night’s 1-0 victory against Leeds United.

Cantwell divided opinion during his 18-month spell at Ibrox and was cast aside by Philippe Clement during last summer’s pre-season preparations as all parties tried to find a club for the player elsewhere. The attacking midfielder has taken some time to get up and running at Ewood Park but bagged his first goal for the club from the penalty spot in Tuesday’s home win, which takes his tally to one goal and three assists in 14 matches.

And Rovers manager Eustace reckons the 26-year-old maverick is helping the whole team ‘evolve’ as they moved to within just two points of the Championship play-off spots. Speaking to the Lancashire Telegraph, he said: “I don’t mind who takes the penalties as long as they put it away. It is important Toddy is off the mark now.

“It is his first goal for the club which is a big thing, I think it had been playing on his mind a tiny bit. He could have scored a couple more but he is getting in the right areas. He is playing some fantastic football.

“He is really a focal point for us now. He is helping us evolve as a footballing team and we are fortunate that he is here.”
