LAKE CHARLES, La. (KPLC/Gray News) – A Louisiana woman is dead after deputies said a 20-year-old man accidentally fired a shot into her home.
The Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office said deputies responded to a trailer park in Lake Charles around 9 p.m. Monday. There, they found the body of 66-year-old Cristina Lobato, who had suffered an apparent gunshot wound.
The day before, deputies had reportedly responded to the same trailer park in reference to a shooting call. They were told by 20-year-old Obking Provost that he had been shot while walking in the neighborhood that day.
After investigating, the deputies said they determined no assault had occurred, and Provost, a convicted felon unable to legally own a firearm, had accidentally shot his gun, injuring himself and causing a bullet to strike and kill Lobato in her home.
Officials took Provost into custody on Tuesday. He faces charges including manslaughter, obstruction of justice, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and illegal discharge of a firearm.
His bond is pending, and the investigation is ongoing.
