A passenger on a British Airways flight to Edinburgh experienced a medical emergency shortly after takeoff today from London City.

The male passenger, believed to be in his 30s, collapsed during the 11 am flight, prompting cabin crew to issue an announcement seeking assistance from any medical professionals on board.

A doctor and a children’s nurse quickly responded and provided aid as the man lay on the cabin floor, the Sun reports.

One witness described the incident, saying: “The plane had just taken off when the man keeled over into the lap of the passenger next to him. He looked white as a sheet and had to lie down in the aisle, where the doctor and nurse attended to him.”

The flight encountered periods of turbulence on approach to Scotland and cabin crew had to move the unwell passenger into a row of seats where he could lie down.

A source said: “They secured him with an extended seatbelt so he could remain lying across the seats. He regained consciousness just before landing but still appeared very shaken.”

The 1-hour-20-minute flight managed to land 15 minutes ahead of schedule, thanks to “shortcuts” granted by air traffic control. Emergency services were alerted in advance and were waiting on the tarmac for flight BA8704 when it arrived.

British Airways has been contacted for comment.
