A well-known restaurateur, often referred to as the ‘godfather of hospitality’, has expressed interest in Gregg Wallace‘s position on MasterChef, asserting his capability to “deliver”.
Wallace has recently stepped back from his role on the beloved culinary programme following a BBC News investigation that brought to light allegations of inappropriate sexual comments and behaviour.
On Tuesday, the BBC disclosed that additional accusations have been made against the presenter, leading to the decision not to broadcast the Masterchef Christmas specials. Despite this, the former greengrocer has vehemently denied all claims, with his legal representatives stating: “It is entirely false that he engages in behaviour of a sexually harassing nature.”
In the meantime, another individual seems eager to vie for his spot.
Speaking to Richard Eden at the Restaurant Association’s awards dinner in London, Robert Walton, aged 68 and a veteran in the restaurant industry, hinted to the Daily Mail that he would be an ideal candidate for the BBC gig. He remarked: “I love the idea of working on TV. I can deliver, and I’m a safe pair of hands.”
The ‘godfather’ also mentioned that although he doesn’t know Wallace personally, he is quite familiar with John Torode.
The BBC had initially reported that the allegations involved 13 individuals over a span of 17 years, with MasterChef’s production company Banijay UK confirming that Wallace is “committed to fully co-operating” with the ongoing review.
Comments made by celebrity chef and MasterChef: The Professionals judge Marcus Wareing about his colleague Gregg Wallace have resurfaced amidst recent allegations. Although Marcus has not directly addressed the claims, he previously shared his thoughts on working with Wallace before the 15th series of The Professionals in 2023.
He remarked: “If it was just me and Monica, then we’re good at predicting the winner, but because Gregg is in the mix, it f***s it all up a bit. We have times where we do disagree but everyone’s entitled to their point of view.”
Following the controversy, Wallace took to Instagram on Sunday to post a video where he anticipated complaints “see the complaints coming from a handful of middle-class women of a certain age, just from Celebrity MasterChef”, stating that it wasn’t “right”. However, the video was soon deleted after further backlash, prompting Wallace to issue an apology for “any offence that I caused”.
He expressed regret, saying: “I want to apologise for any offence that I caused with my post yesterday and any upset I may have caused to a lot of people.”
He admitted to not being in a good headspace and feeling isolated and stressed when he made the post. Wallace acknowledged the need for a break during the ongoing investigation, asking for understanding and hoping for acceptance of his apology.
