A historic Dumfries library is to close for several months for refurbishment.

The Ewart Library, which celebrated its 120th anniversary this year, will close in early January for four months so that work can be carried out.

Opening hours at the Georgetown and Lochthorn libraries have been extended, while the customer service centre at North West Community Campus will also be available.

The impressive Catherine Street building was funded by philanthropist Andrew Carnegie and opened in 1904 on land gifted by Miss McKie.

It was named after former Dumfries MP William Ewart, who was responsible for the introduction of the Free Libraries Acts of 1850 in England, and 1853 in Scotland, allowing public libraries to be supported by local taxation for the first time.

It will close on January 6, 2025 with the work expected to take four months to complete.

Appointments at the Georgetown, Lochthorn and North West Community Campus customer service centres can be booked by calling 030 33 33 3004.
