A man has been rushed to hospital and homes evacuated after a huge fire broke out at a fish and chip shop in a Scots town.

Emergency services raced to Stewarton Street in Wishaw at around 2.27pm on Wednesday, December 4, after a commercial premises caught fire.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service dispatched six fire engines to the blaze with firefighters working to tackle the inferno. Police Scotland confirmed one man was taken to hospital as a precaution and the fire not being treated as wilful.

Residents in the area were evacuated from their homes as a precaution and the surrounding roads were closed.

In an update on Thursday, officers confirmed the road had reopened to traffic but the footpath outside the building remained closed.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Stewarton Street in Wishaw has reopened to traffic following a building fire yesterday.

“One man was taken to hospital as a precaution. The fire is not being treated as wilful. The footpath outside the building will remain closed for pedestrian safety.”
