(CNN) – New research has found a history of lead in gasoline may be linked to tens of millions of mental health conditions in the United States.

According to the study, some people who were already at risk were more likely to develop diagnosable disorders sooner.

Scientists say the lead exposure likely would not have happened had it not been in gasoline.

The U.S. did not start phasing out lead in gasoline until the 1980s but by then, it had already created decades of harm, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration.

Previous research has found lead is harmful to almost every organ system.

The study was published Wednesday in The Journal of Child Psychology and Psychiatry.
