Storm Darragh is set to bring major disruption to Scotland over the coming days. The weatherfront is predicted to batter the country with wind and rain as we approach the weekend.
Earlier we told how the Met Office had issued an amber “danger to life” wind warning for the weekend. That wind alert is in place from 3am on Saturday until 9pm the same day, covering a section of Scotland’s south-west as Storm Darragh heads eastwards from the Atlantic.
It is just one of several warnings issued by the national forecaster for the next few days. The most recent alert is for rain, with large parts of Scotland set to be hit by downpours starting tomorrow.
The yellow warning starts at 3pm on Friday and is in place overnight until noon on Saturday. The alert covers the vast majority of southern Scotland and much of the Central Belt, including Glasgow and Edinburgh.
It stretches from Islay in the Inner Hebrides off the west coast, across central Scotland and up towards the North East, with the cities of Stirling, Perth, Dundee, and Aberdeen all within the warning zone.
Rainfall of 20-30 mm is expected across the country and as much as 50-60mm over the higher ground. The downpours may lead to flooding in certain areas, with the rainfall also expected to cause disruption on roads and railways in Scotland.
Speaking about the impact of Storm Darragh, Met Office Chief Meteorologist Neil Armstrong said: “A spell of strong winds will affect parts of northern Scotland from Wednesday afternoon until Thursday morning. Winds will initially be south or southeasterly, but turn westerly during Thursday morning.
“Gusts will reach 50-60 mph widely with 65-75mph possible in places, especially around exposed coasts. A band of rain will also move eastwards across the UK overnight, bringing heavy rain to most parts of the UK as it crosses the country. We expect this rain to clear the southeast of England by 7am on Thursday morning, before another spell of wet and windy weather begins.”
