A leading skin specialist is on a mission to educate us about the common mistakes we’re making with dry shampoo.
Now she divulged the correct way to use it for sprucing up our hair game. Dry shampoo, beloved by many for its ability to keep hair looking clean for longer without a wash, comes in an aerosol can similar to hairspray which absorbs the unwanted oil and grease after just a few quick sprays.
It refreshes your locks, reduces the greasy look, and leaves a fresh, fragrant scent. However, we’ve been told there’s a finesse to maximising the product’s effectiveness, and it appears that not everyone has mastered this art.
The good news is beauty pros on social media are ever-ready to guide us through the maze of personal care.
One such pro is Dr Aamna Adel, a London-based dermatologist registrar, who often uses TikTok to share her expertise on battling skincare and haircare issues. In one of her latest uploads, she points out most people don’t know how to properly deploy dry shampoo and proceeds to reveal the right way to do it to achieve truly refreshed hair – and, according to her, it’s incredibly simple.
She gets to grips with the product in her video and advises: “The number of people that don’t know how to use dry shampoo literally blows my mind, so let me tell you exactly how to use it to get fresh hair – and it’s so easy.
“Firstly, if you’re struggling with a white cast, here’s a few reasons why. This is going to sound so simple but you need to shake the bottle properly before you start, and in between sprays.”
She warned if it’s not mixed properly, it can leave a strong white cast on the hair and affect the effectiveness of the dry shampoo. The expert added: “Now the technique, super important, concentrate on only the oily parts of your scalp and you want to use light, short sprays like this. Try to hold the bottle around 20cm from your roots because you just don’t want to be too close.
“Now, at this point, you need to be patient. Do not, I repeat, do not touch it. Let it sit for a few minutes so it can absorb the excess oil from your scalp and then you can go in with your fingers or a comb to evenly distribute it.”
She also suggests using it at night to give the dry shampoo more time to soak up any excess oil while allowing the white cast to further disappear.
The expert doesn’t advise using it for more than two days consecutively as it can “build up on the scalp”. The dermatologist said: “It’s actually better to wash your hair more often to keep your scalp clean.”
In the comments section, she emphasised the importance of continuing to wash your hair with traditional shampoo, as dry shampoo absolutely does not replace this.
People were thankful for the “helpful” advice while others claimed dry shampoo didn’t work well for their hair.
