Warning – this article contains full spoilers for Black Doves.

Black Doves, the latest must-watch thriller from Netflix, has just been released this week and is set to make waves on the streaming platform.

Set during Christmas in London, the gripping mystery begins when professional secret agent Helen Webb (played by Keira Knightley), who is assigned to politician Wallace Webb (Andrew Buchan), starts an affair with Jason Davies (Andrew Koji).

When Jason becomes a victim in a mysterious series of assassinations, Helen’s boss Mrs Reed (Sarah Lancashire) dispatches hitman Sam Young (Ben Whishaw) to safeguard her.

However, Helen is determined to solve Jason’s murder, and together they eventually connect the killing to a powerful crime syndicate known as the Clarks, reports the Mirror.

In the season finale, Helen and Sam confront the formidable matriarch Alex Clark (Tracey Ullman), who denies any knowledge of the assassination.

So, who was responsible for Jason’s death?

During the tense showdown, it’s revealed that Alex’s son Trent (Angus Cooper) orchestrated the murders of Jason, MI5 mole Maggie (Hannah Khalique-Brown), and tabloid journalist Phillip (Thomas Coombes) to prevent being exposed for the accidental killing of a Chinese diplomat.

What Trent didn’t know was that the death of Kai-Ming’s (Isabella Wei) father was captured on camera as Maggie had bugged the apartment and was selling secrets to the tabloids while providing the most sensitive information to British intelligence.

Government official Stephen Yarrick (Sam Troughton) was enlisted, implicating the prime minister in a phone call captured on a hidden camera.

Trent, tormented by guilt over years of jeopardising his family’s reputation with his behaviour, orchestrated the triple hit without his mother’s knowledge. This revelation triggers a fiery reaction from Helen.

As turmoil begins to brew outside with both UK and Chinese agents converging on the warehouse, a frantic Alex attempts to disarm Helen but is shot in the head. She promptly puts Trent out of his misery as well.

Later, when calm has been restored, Helen meets with Reed to piece together the puzzle, revealing that Jason was actually an MI5 agent assigned to spy on her to determine if she had been leaking government secrets.

Despite knowing she was a secret agent, Jason’s report completely clears her, convincing Helen that their love was genuine.

The story concludes with a festive montage as the characters spend Christmas with their families, and Sam receives an unexpected visitor – Hector Newman (Luther Ford).

Reed also gets a surprise holiday guest when it’s revealed that Helen’s babysitter was at her flat, seemingly a new Black Dove in training.

Considering they’re spending Christmas Day together, it’s highly likely that the duo are related in some way. However, she could simply be a new recruit assigned to monitor Helen after she triumphed over her intended successor Dani (Agnes O’Casey).

Fortunately, her identity won’t remain a mystery for long as Black Doves has already been renewed for a second season, promising more exciting twists and spy action.

Black Doves is available to stream on Netflix.
