PRINCETON, W.Va. – In Princeton, a grinch-themed tree is helping to give back to the community.

The Mercer County Sheriff’s Department Tax Office has put up its Giving Tree for its second year, and the goal is to help people who are wards of the state.

Lori Barton, the Sheriff’s Tax Deputy, said they are often in a position to have limited access to funds and are under the Sheriff’s oversight.

Each of the clients in this position has a heart on the tree.

Gifts and donations are needed to provide them with gifts, a dinner and as happy a Christmas as possible. But the public’s help is needed.

“We think that the need is there because they need to be shown that they’re special as well. The money is not a factor. It’s the gift from the heart,” says Barton.

People can stop by the tax office at the courthouse and make a donation until Dec. 20. For more information, the Mercer County Sheriff’s Department Tax Office can be reached at (304) 487-8363.
