Ayrshire College childcare students raised £405 for Children 1st charity as part of the ‘working with others’ course.
Childcare Level 6 students decided to organise a fundraiser at the Kilwinning campus to help local families attending the North Ayrshire Family Wellbeing Hub in Bourtreehill.
Children 1st gives hands-on support to families under stress in many of Scotland’s communities.
The North Ayrshire Family Wellbeing Hub works alongside children and families to help them overcome challenges such as poverty, trauma and poor mental health.
The charity offers emotional, practical, and financial support to children, their families, and the people who care for them. The charity also works to prevent families from reaching crisis points and to keep children safe.
One of the students, Chloe Campbell, 26, said: “Myself and my college class organised a fundraiser as part of our ‘working with others’ course.
“One of the key takeaways from this course is the emphasis on active listening and empathy. Engaging with classmates from various backgrounds allows us to appreciate different viewpoints and fosters a sense of inclusivity.
“Collaborative projects challenge us to step outside our comfort zones, encouraging us to share ideas while also valuing the contributions of others.
“Overall, the ‘working with others’ course is helping equip us with essential skills that will carry into our future academic and professional endeavours.”
Chloe continued: “As a group we discussed different charities we would like to raise money for and what we could do to help raise those funds.
“We wanted to give to a local charity in Ayrshire and decided to give the money to Children’s 1st in Bourtreehill, we hope the money that we raised helps local families in that area.”
Childcare students organised a bake sale, raffle and tombola at Kilwinning campus earlier this month.
Chloe said: “A couple of us even walked up Kilwinning town with our buckets to let people know we were having a fundraiser in the college.
“The day was a success, and we raised £405 for our chosen charity.
“All of this wouldn’t have happened if it wasn’t for our lecturer Karen Torrance, and every single student that was involved.”
Lecturer Karen Torrance said: “As part of their college course, the class is expected to work collaboratively on a group project.
“The project is entirely decided on by the class. This year, this remarkable Childcare Level 6 class decided to raise money for a local children’s charity and exceeded all my expectations.
“They worked incredibly hard together to plan and organise this event and their hard work paid off.
“It was great to see the level of enthusiasm the class had. It was an absolute joy to work with this class and they should be incredibly proud of their success.”
