Sometimes life has to be shaken up a little, and one man knows this all too well.
Damien Muretti, 39, from Essex, knows all about life’s changes. The founder of Bed Nerdz used to run one of the UK’s largest removal and storage companies.
But now he’s swapped that for a very different venture – a sex toy company aimed at helping people connect with their bodies.
Damien revealed: “I moved the likes of the Prime Minister at the time (Cameron) and Chancellor (Osborne), as well as countless cabinet ministers, politicians, TV stars and sportsmen.
“I found that I was tied more to the operational side of things rather than steering the ship. I had just had my second child at that point, and yearned for a more even balance of home and work life.
“I moved into buying and renovating property briefly, which is where I really enjoyed the creative process of seeing ideas come to life. Very quickly, I realised I wanted to project my creativity into an outlet where I had daily involvement. This career change felt like a very natural next step since I’ve always been passionate about sexual wellness.”
Despite what some might think, he described his shift into the industry as “mostly smooth”. He felt it was a natural progression for him, though he acknowledged that there have been challenges along the way.
“Obviously, this industry is absolutely peppered with pitfalls and obstacles,” he said. “Even opening a bank account when tied to the industry is insanely difficult, but I’ve always believed that you should follow through on everything you set out to do.
“Every roadblock is another reminder of why I’m doing what I’m doing. To really drive in that message of normalising a healthy sex life, and creating time for your sexual wellness as part of a routine, as it’s so important to us as human beings. Roadblocks are there to be smashed – metaphorically speaking, that is!”
Damien is now thrilled with his career change and has had the opportunity to share his experiences with many others in the field. He is dedicated to assisting his clients in achieving greater satisfaction in their lives, which naturally includes their sexual health.
He relishes the idea of people experiencing that “morning glow”, complete with an extra bounce in their step, due to using their products. Damien also has numerous plans for expanding the brand further.
When quizzed about his aspirations to transform the sex toy sector, he shared: “I think we almost have to look at it as if now that we’ve grown up, we’ve kind of lost our playground, our toy box, where we would learn and explore new things.
“As children, many of us enjoyed climbing frames and sandpits and rummaging through our friends’ toy boxes. Many of us now find that exploratory fun in the bedroom, except we find it harder to share or communicate these joys than we did back then, even within relationships, let alone friendship groups.
“Our hope and mission is to bring these ‘toy boxes’ into more bedrooms, fostering open discussions and communication, and have lots of fun in the process! After all, one toy is enjoyable, but a toy box full is where the real magic begins.”
He also elaborated on the Bed Nerdz concept, which has always aimed at encouraging playful exploration and for individuals to experiment. Admittedly, he believes this approach will greatly enrich people’s lives.
Damien further highlighted that regardless of ownership of a Bed Nerdz product, science supports the immense benefits orgasms can have, enhancing endorphins and serotonin levels to highs not easily attained otherwise. They also provide other numerous health advantages.
He concluded: “Even to be part of the conversation as a brand pushing to incorporate making time for self-care and self-love (be it on your own or with a partner) is really satisfying.”
