A Dumfries and Galloway school is open as normal this morning despite part of the roof being blown off by Storm Darragh.

The storm brought winds of more than 60mph to the region on Saturday, bringing down trees and causing power cuts.

It also took off part of the roof of Castle Douglas High School.

However, lessons were continuing as planned on Monday morning.

A local authority update to councillors over the weekend stated: “During the high winds from Storm Darragh, a portion of Castle Douglas High School roof was blown off.

“Internal and external inspection work was undertaken and we are content there is no internal damage or water ingress.

“There is no impact to access to the school or learning spaces and we expect the school to open normally tomorrow (Monday).

“The damage will be made safe and the school grounds tidied today (Sunday), now that the winds have abated.”

Parts of Dumfries and Galloway were covered by an amber weather warning for wind on Saturday, with all of the region covered by a yellow warning from Friday afternoon until Sunday morning.

Wind speeds of 62 miles per hour were recorded at Dundrennan and West Freugh.

Fallen trees blocked a number of roads, including the A713 between Greenlaw and Gatehouse, as well as roads near Gatehouse, New Abbey and Gelston.

And there were power cuts across the region, including parts of Stranraer and the Glenkens.
