Ange Postecoglou has landed a Tottenham love bomb from a leading pundit – but it comes with a stark reminder.
The former Celtic boss has been a breathe of fresh air in North London in terms of excitement and style of football. The 59-year-old has adopted the attacking brand he deployed at Parkhead at the English Premier League side but with that comes pros and cons. It’s been a tough run of late with his side inconsistent. They have battered the likes of Aston Villa, Manchester City and Manchester United this season but also lost to lesser lights such as Ipswich Town at home.
They chucked away a two goal lead over Chelsea too, at the weekend to eventually lose 4-3 with the pressure rising. Incredibly, it is Rangers at Ibrox in the Europa League next up and Postecoglou will be desperate to avoid defeat to Philippe Clement on his return to Glasgow.
Tottenham’s style and struggles with form have been highlighted regularly but talk has ramped up a gear in recent days. It started with a fan confrontation after their defeat to Bournemouth and has heighted again after that defeat to Chelsea. Liverpool hero Jamie Carragher – a leading pundit for Sky Sports – is a huge fan of what Ange brings to the table and has loved watching his teams in action, but has warned ‘It needs to be better’ and things must change or else he will find himself out of work eventually.
He said on Monday Night Football: “I love Ange Postecoglou since he’s came into the Premier League the last 18 months in terms of the football they play, it is exciting. They are the most entertaining team I think in the last 18 months I have seen.
“I know a lot of the supporters wanted their Tottenham back and in some ways he has given them back. They are exciting to watch and they are almost everyone’s second team.
“But you don’t ever think they will go on and win something. Is that a little bit unfair me saying that? Do Tottenham ever win anything? That is the point. Is this a team set up to win big things?
“I said yesterday that if certain things don’t change he will eventually be out of a job. I don’t want him to be. I enjoy watching them play a lot more than previous managers of Tottenham play.
“But the fact when they are ninth. I think we looked at a graphic from the Chelsea game last season to now and they are ninth in the table. It has to be better than that for Spurs.”
