Snooker star and diehard Celtic fan John Higgins admits he has been left to “eat humble pie” after having “terrible” things to say about Brendan Rodgers’ return to Parkhead.

The Irishman succeed Ange Postecoglou last summer in the wake of the Australian’s all-conquering Treble success with the Hoops – making his return to Celtic Park after controversially ditching the Scottish Premiership champions for Leicester City in 2019. But despite some initial grumbles from sections of the Celtic support, Rodgers would lead the club the league title and the Scottish Cup last term with the club now making their mark on the Champions League this term.

And the Wishaw Wizard admits he was among the punters who weren’t convinced by the return of Rodgers, telling the Let Me Be Frank podcast: “I have got to be honest, I didn’t want Rodgers back. It’s terrible to say it.

“Just with how he left and that 10 in a row. And different things. But I have had to eat humble pie. The way he has got us back playing.”

Brendan Rodgers celebrates at full time

Pressed on if it was down to his mid-season exit for the Premier League, he went on: “Of course. That’s the only reason. A lot of Celtic fans think if he would have stayed, we would have got the ten. I know [Steven] Gerrard was coming. He does have Rangers’ number big time, doesn’t he?”
