MONTGOMERY, Ala. (Gray News/WSFA) – Officials in Alabama say two people who were pulled out of a burning house over the weekend have died.

Montgomery Fire crews said the fire started in a single-story home in the 4000 block of Vandiver Court Saturday morning.

Firefighters at the scene said they found a 5-year-old girl and a woman inside the house.

They were able to be rescued from the home and stabilized. However, District Fire Chief Kenneth Peoples said on Tuesday they both ended up not surviving.

Peoples said the 5-year-old was pronounced dead on Sunday and the woman died on Monday.

A family representative confirmed the victims as 65-year-old Rosa Parker and her granddaughter Ennocence Mathis, who was a student at Chisholm Elementary School.

“We are deeply saddened to learn of the tragic incident that claimed the life of one of our students and their loved one. Our hearts go out to the family, friends, school family and all those affected by this devastating loss,” Montgomery Public Schools shared in a statement.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Donations of clothes and money are being accepted to assist the family through Chisholm Elementary.

Montgomery City District 3 Councilwoman Marche Johnson is also helping out the family, which lost their home in the fire. She posted on Facebook that donations of large furniture items, rental properties and food please can be coordinated with her office.
