WASHINGTON (Gray DC) – The head of the FBI, Christopher Wray, is resigning his post. He told an all-hands meeting that he’ll leave before president-elect Donald Trump takes office.
Christopher Wray was named FBI Director by Donald Trump seven years ago. Now, he is resigning from his position, before Donald Trump returns to the White House. FBI directors are nominated to serve a ten-year term; Wray is only about 7 years into his service.
Bowing to the reality that president-elect Donald Trump planned to replace him, Christopher Wray, told bureau employees on Wednesday that he intended to resign in January. Donald Trump will be sworn into office on January 20, 2025.
In late November, Trump said that he intended to nominate Kash Patel, who worked in a variety of roles in the first Trump Administration, to run the FBI.
Wray became FBI Director after Trump fired James Comey. As FBI director, he signed off on the FBI’s search for classified documents at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate in 2022. He also oversaw the FBI’s investigation into 2 assassination attempts targeting Donald Trump.
Trump once called Wray “a man of impeccable credentials.” However, in a statement Wednesday, Trump said, “The resignation of Christopher Wray is a great day for America as it will end the Weaponization of what has become known as the United States Department of Injustice.” Kash Patel, a former federal prosecutor, must still win Senate confirmation and his nomination has been met with some skepticism on Capitol Hil.
