GREENBRIER COUNTY, W.Va. -A drop in student enrollment and the subsequent loss of more than $1 million in revenue for the 2025-26 school year in Greenbrier County Schools is leaving officials with hard decisions to make on how to deal with the shortfall.
One solution considered was to close Crichton Elementary School next year, but schools Superintendent Jeff Bryant told the school board in a meeting Tuesday night he does not recommend doing that, at least for the 2025-26 school year.
The school system saw a decline in enrollment of 160 students this year, which directly impacts state funding allocations for public schools in the county.
Bryant said that personnel reductions across all programs may be necessary to make up the shortfall for next year, but keeping Crichton Elementary open at this time is the right decision for students and the community.
“The board, the staff and I want Crichton Elementary and the community to know that we listen to them, and we have made significant cuts for next school year in order to keep that school open. So, we are partners, we do listen, and we do react to that,” said Bryant.
