Multiple fire crews raced to a blaze at the derelict former Bairds department store in Hamilton early this morning.

Firefighters were alerted to the incident on Duke Street at around 6.40am.

The fire was located within the disused building. It is not yet known how the blaze started.

An eye-witness told Lanarkshire Live: “Four fire appliances have been outside Bairds since before 9am with officers fully fitted out with masks, assuming for the asbestos.”

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: “We were alerted at 6.40am on Friday, December 13, to reports of a fire within a derelict building on Duke Street in Hamilton.

“Operations Control mobilised four fire appliances to the scene, and crews extinguished the fire.

“There were no casualties, and firefighters left the scene after ensuring the area was safe.”

Police Scotland have been contacted for comment.
