Train services between Dumfries and Carlisle have been cancelled after a lorry left the motorway and ended up on the railway line.

Emergency services rushed to the scene on Friday morning but the disruption is expected to continue for the rest of the day.

Passengers are being advised to use other rail or bus services to ensure they reach their destination.

An update on the National Rail website stated: “A HGV has come off the M74 and is currently on the railway.

“Emergency services are on scene and working to get the railway reopened as quickly as possible, but it’s unlikely trains will run for the rest of today.”

ScotRail has warned that stations between Dumfries and Carlisle will not be served, while services between Glasgow Central and Carlisle via Dumfries will be cancelled, delayed or terminated at and started back from Dumfries. All stations between Dumfries and Carlisle will not be served.

A rail replacement bus service is due to run between Dumfries and Carlisle.

Passengers can also use their tickets – for no charge – on Avanti West Coast services between Glasgow Central and Carlisle or TransPennine Express services between Glasgow Central and Lockerbie or Carlisle.

They can also be used on the number 79 Stagecoach bus between Dumfries, Gretna Green, Annan and Carlisle.
