ASHEVILLE, N.C. (WHNS/Gray News) – An animal shelter in North Carolina is helping a senior dog who was found in a tragic situation.

Brother Wolf Animal Rescue in Asheville said that the dog, named Sugarplum, was discovered in a home where her family was found dead.

In a Facebook post, the shelter called the situation “unimaginable.”

“We can’t fathom the fear, panic, and confusion she must have felt for so long. Waiting for someone to remember her, to care about her,” the shelter wrote.

While it’s unclear exactly what happened to the family, a spokesperson for the shelter said the discovery was made during a wellness check.

“Our understanding is that there was a wellness check performed, and at that time, her human family was found deceased,” a spokesperson for Brother Wolf Animal Rescue said. “Sugarplum had been in the house with them for many weeks.”

After weeks of fear and confusion, Sugarplum is getting the love and care she needs.

She was taken in by a local shelter and then transferred to Brother Wolf Animal Rescue on Wednesday morning.

Sugarplum has been placed with a foster family while she awaits adoption.

Brother Wolf Animal Rescue is continuing to rebuild after the shelter was devastated by Hurricane Helene.
