A crash probe has been launched following the death of an elderly Christmas shopper who was struck by a car in a serious collision.

A huge emergency presence descended on the scene last night after a smash between a blue Ford Focus and a 72-year-old woman. The horrific crash took place in Bootle, near Liverpool, The Mirror reports.

The injured woman was rushed to hospital where she sadly died a short time later. Police have confirmed that the driver of the car stopped at the scene near to Brewster Street Garages. It is reported that the woman had been out Christmas shopping at the time, is is thought locally.

The Liverpool Echo reports that shocked eyewitnesses saw “bags and Christmas presents” strewn across the road. Another described seeing “blood everywhere.”

Chief Inspector Andy Foster, said: “We are appealing for anyone who witnessed the incident to come forward. We are also appealing to any motorists who may have dashcam footage to get in touch. The woman’s family has been informed and are being supported by officers.”

Emergency services remained on the scene last night.
