Crime drama film The Green Mile, starring Hollywood legend Tom Hanks, is all set to air on television this weekend.

The 1999 movie will air on Channel 4 tonight (December 14) from 9:35pm until the early hours of Sunday morning at 1:10am.

This means it will also be available to watch on on-demand service 4OD for those who aren’t able to catch it when it airs on television.

The Frank Darabont directorial is based on the 1996 novel by Stephen King and originally released in the late 90s.

It stars Tom as a death row prison guard during the Great Depression who witnesses supernatural events following the arrival of an enigmatic convict (Michael Clarke Duncan) at the facility he’s working in.

As well as Mr Hanks, the film also stars David Morse, Bonnie Hunt, Sam Rockwell and James Cromwell in supporting roles.

It opened up to positive reviews from critics with many praising Frank’s direction as well as the performances from Tom and Michael.

It also went on to become a box office success, garnering $286.8 million from a $60 million budget.

The Green Mile was nominated for four Academy Awards, namely Best Picture, Best Supporting Actor for Michael, Best Sound and Best Adapted Screenplay.

It also went on to win several other awards including a BMI Film & TV Award, two Broadcast Film Critics Association Awards and three People’s Choice Awards.

The film has a 8.3 rating on IMDb as well as a 94% popcornmeter rating on Rotten Tomatoes from 250,000 ratings.

Film buffs have left their reviews over the years as one person has expressed: “One of the best prison films ever made.”

Another writes: “A moving story, helped by some great performances, primarily by Michael Clarke Duncan as Coffey, Hanks, Hutchison as the guards, and Jeter and Rockwell as prisoners.”

A third adds: “The three-hour-plus film permits the kind of detailing that not only brings the storytelling to life, but sometimes persuades us we’re breathing to its rhythms.”

While a fourth expresses: “Beautifully crafted and emotionally satisfying.”

The Green Mile airs tonight at 9:35pm on Channel 4 and 4OD.
