HINTON, W. Va. -Kids got to show off their musical talents on Sunday as part of a performing group with a studio in Hinton.

Summers County Performing Arts held a recital for its piano and voice students in a performance called “It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas.” Led by an experienced teacher, Lisa Ann Colombo, the recital featured students from the ages of six through eighteen, performing more than forty songs.

Colombo says this experience in music means a lot to her students, teaching them important skills in things like self-discipline, stage presence, and even math. We spoke to Piper Hickman and Harper Wiley, two students participating in the show, who say they enjoy performing and encourage other kids to consider joining them in this program.

“I’ve been performing since I was her age, so I’m a little less nervous than I would have been then,” says Hickman.

“I’m only nine. I’ve been doing this for about two years,” says Wiley.

“It gives you a lot of good experiences, like, if you’re nervous around people, it helps you come out of your shell,” says Hickman.

“It’s weird. Come on down,” says Wiley.

If you would like to join Summers County Performing Arts, its second semester will start the first week of January, with classes for ages three to adult. You can find more information on their Facebook page.
