HENRY COUNTY, Ala. (WTVY/Gray News) – A 22-year-old man drowned during a duck hunting trip on a lake in the South this weekend, officials said.
The Henry County Sheriff’s Office said the drowning happened Sunday on Lake Eufaula, which runs along the border of Alabama and Georgia.
Officials identified the hunter as Jon Kaleb Nation of Griffin, Georgia.
Nation was among a group of duck hunters whose boat drifted from an island near Thomas Mill Creek in the southernmost part of the lake.
The sheriff’s office said Nation attempted to swim to get the boat but didn’t make it.
Officials said the call for the distressed hunter came in just after 5 a.m. Sunday and Nation’s body was found around 10 a.m. after a search.
Divers first found the boat in open waters and later found Nation’s body.
“This is a very tragic incident, I would like to express my thanks to the timely response by so many agencies to help us this morning. However, this isn’t the outcome we were hoping for,” Henry County Sheriff Eric Blankenship said in a statement. “Please keep this family and his friends in your thoughts and prayers as they cope with this difficult situation.”
